The 1973 West Indies United Team
50 years later, the 1973 West Indies United team reunited in Toronto at BMO Field. This collection of players became the first team of colour to reach the Canadian Soccer National Championship Final in St Johns, Newfoundland. West Indies United captured the Hearts and Minds of the Black community and the larger football community with their success on the field and beautiful style of play. On February 25th, Canada Soccer announced that the club would be recognized as an Organization of Distinction.
“Most of us came here in the late 60s early 70s, and when we came here (in some respects) we were kinda displaced, we were in a new culture and not necessarily a culture that totally embraced us.
The club became the foundation to help you get established within the community.”
