The Canadian Federal Election - Part One
Everything you need to know about voting
One year and eleven months later, Canadians are once again heading to the polls. Following the Liberals’ decision to trigger a snap election, federal leaders embarked on 36-days of coast-to-coast campaigning. The question now becomes, When can you vote? And, How do you vote?
Registering
If this is your first election, do not worry, the registration process is quite simple. Prior to voting, you can register online or (in-person) at an Elections Canada Office (deadline September 14th 6:00 p.m.). Registering early will allow you to receive a voter information card which contains the address of your assigned polling station. If you miss this deadline, you can still register both on election day and during advance polling at your assigned polling station.
What Are Acceptable Forms of ID?
The best practice is to bring an ID that includes your photo, name and current address, i.e., a driver’s licence. Voters can also present two forms of ID, both must include your name but only one requires an address. For example, bringing a health card with a phone bill is seen as an acceptable form of identification. In the case you can not present any form of ID, someone assigned to your polling station can vouch for you after you declare your identity and address in writing.
When Can Canadians Vote?
On election day, on advance polling days or during the special ballot timeline.
